Peeling Carrots

I have got this far

when many haven’t

better men and better women

people that changed the world

in the short time they were in it

 

44-years-old

halfway through

at best

I haven’t done a thing

but

I have listened to James Taylor

his honeyed voice mingling

with summer flies and pastel skies

 

I can peel a carrot

like nobody’s business

 

and once

I popped a wheelie

the whole length of my street

 

no matter what happens

from here on in

nobody

can take that away from me
