The Scream

They parked across from us

the driver’s door opened

a lady got out

stretched

arched her back

the passenger door opened

he got out

flung his head back

and screamed

the sound explored every crack

in the underground carpark

it flowed beneath each car

and sailed above them

it bounced around

and through us

and a sliver of it

clung to our irises

as we looked at each other

they walked away in silence

side by side

they had nothing to discuss

we stayed in the vacuum

that they had left behind

I found myself smiling
